Company Overview: Higher Ground Labs is the leading funder, accelerator, and venture fund for progressive political technology. Founded by Obama alumni Betsy Hoover and Shomik Dutta in 2017, we’ve since invested in 80+ startups—many now core to the progressive tech ecosystem—blending for-profit capital, private-sector rigor, and user-centered innovation to strengthen campaigns and causes. Backed by investors like Reid Hoffman, Ron Conway, and Chris Sacca, HGL continues to scale impact through portfolio support, ecosystem collaboration, and market leadership.

Our sister organization, Higher Ground Institute, is a nonprofit that serves as a strategic innovation engine for the left. We create space to prototype, test, and scale new approaches to organizing, media, and digital infrastructure —grounded in the real-world needs of practitioners.

The Role: HGL is hiring a Manager, Programs & Communications (Contract) to support a diverse set of strategic initiatives. This is a mid-level role ideal for a self-starter who thrives in fast-paced environments and enjoys wearing multiple hats. You will coordinate events, manage communications, support fundraising materials, and help drive execution on high-impact projects and convenings.

You will work across Higher Ground Labs and Higher Ground Institute entities. The Manager, Programs & Communications (Contract) will report to our Principal and work closely with Higher Ground Labs and Higher Ground Institute leaders.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Communications & Content: Create and publish social posts; write newsletters, blog posts, and memos; draft decks and materials to support fundraising and external communications.
  • Project & Event Management: Lead timelines and deliverables, coordinate logistics, liaise with vendors, and ensure smooth execution for major convenings, including a conference.
  • Research & Stakeholder Engagement: Conduct research, write reports, interview and manage partners and stakeholders, and ensure alignment across efforts.
  • Operations & Coordination: Organize and schedule meetings, manage vendor relationships, and keep projects moving forward.

The Fit: We are a mission-driven start-up ourselves, operating in a fast-moving and evolving space. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, highly organized, and proactive — someone who takes initiative and thrives when given responsibility. We’re looking for a strong communicator and doer who can manage projects end-to-end, while working collaboratively with a small team.

  • 3–5+ years of relevant experience in program management, operations, communications, events, or logistics
    • Preferred: 2+ years of experience in politics, political tech, or related fields
  • Comfortable working remotely and experienced with asynchronous communication
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and maintain excellent attention to detail
  • Strong writing and communication skills, with experience drafting content for external audiences (social, newsletters, decks, memos)
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage events, vendors, and stakeholders from start to finish
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a knack for building relationships across internal teams, partners, and vendors
  • Data management and analytical skills; high proficiency in Google Suite and comfortable learning new tools; AI savviness a plus
  • Familiarity with digital communications tools such as Canva, WordPress, Mailchimp, and project management systems including Asana
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and proactive—able to take initiative and drive projects forward in a fast-paced environment
  • Good judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Optimism about the role technology can play in strengthening democracy and bettering our politics

Term: Full-time temporary contract, starting as soon as possible and ending December 19, 2025.

Compensation: $7,500 per month.

To Apply: Interested candidates should submit this form. We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis. If you have questions, please email leah@highergroundlabs.com.
